Media Advisory: Human rights organization Breakthrough to host second annual Dudes Against Violence Against Women: Because DUH at Gotham Comedy Club
For once, an all-male lineup on purpose
NEW YORK–Following last year’s sold-out success, human rights organization Breakthrough is hosting “Dudes Against Violence Against Women: Because DUH,” another night of stand-up and standing up against violence and discrimination against women. The evening will include acts from some of the country’s top comedians, hailing from Comedy Central, TBS, and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, at Gotham Comedy Club.
“This isn’t just another ‘very funny evening for a very serious cause.’ This is about action. These comics are standing up to send the message that gender-based violence is unaceptable, and they–and all of us–have the power to be part of the solution,” said Lynn Harris, Breakthrough’s vice president of communications.

WHAT THE COMEDIANS ARE SAYING
Hey guys, we need to talk. Violence against women is happening at epidemic levels. If women were perpetrating violence against women at these rates, we’d be issuing terror alerts and talking about ‘gender profiling’. We need to use all of the tools we have, including comedy, to talk about this problem and change things for the better.” – Dean Obeidallah
I’m doing the show because my wife shouldn’t have to walk the long way to the car every morning so she can avoid ‘that guy’. I’m doing the show because the world deserves better form men.” – Christian Finnegan
I’m doing this show because women shouldn’t be the only ones talking about this. I’m doing this show because we still live in a world where we have to have this show in the first place.” – Kevin Avery
Comedy is a great way to get an idea across; if your joke is also making a point and the audience laughs, you know they’ve understood.” – Rob Paravonian
This year’s show is sponsored by ONE Condoms. In-kind donors include Shmaltz Brewing Company, the New York Mets, and Gotham Comedy Club.
Last year’s event sent the message that dudes are against violence against women by reaching nearly 40 million people through comedy show attendance, media coverage of the event, and social media conversations.
